Campervan Conversion Gas Locker and LPG Appliances (Updated Feb 2026) The gas locker is a crucial component in my layout for the van. Its depth dictates the position of the dividing wall for the rear storage area and its width, the distance between the single beds. I didn't want to reinvent the wheel, so I purchased a used locker from a caravan breakers. It takes x2 6kg bottles of LPG, with a bit of work, it should do fine. The vents in the door will be removed and replaced with a pair of drop vents through its floor. As this cabinet is to be located inside the van, there is no need for it to lock, so a plain turn button will be fitted, removing the chance of loosing the key. It cleaned up well with some Bleach and after a few alterations, now meets my needs. I fitted new bottle straps and location bases. The two 50mm drop vents are visible between the bottle locations and a distribution manifold with three outlets/taps was installed opposite the regulator. The three outlets are for the Water Heater, Cooker and external BBQ Point, these are my only Gas requirements. By installing the manifold inside the gas box, it reduces the need for an additional drop vent. As you need one under every gas coupling/fitting. I've run the three 8mm gas pipes through the boxes base and van floor. The pipes will pop up at the locations where they are needed, again reducing the need for drop vents at any in-line couplings, as they will be under the van, in free air. So the only other drop vents I require, are at the appliance connection points and one at the lowest point in the van, which is the step at the side door. The unit sits on and has been covered with 25mm PIR insulation, then clad with 3mm Ply. The insulation reduces the effect of cold air, which can enter the box through the drop vents. The Box is securely bolted to the van floor and has been given a timber frame, which gives a very solid construction. External Gas Point I fitted a Bulfinch gas point, to plug in a BBQ or Wok Burner.
